Orlando Bloom to Exec Produce ‘Greasy Hands Preachers’

Bloom to tub-thump Paris-produced docu-feature at Spain’s San Sebastian Festival

SAN SEBASTIAN –Moto-buff Orlando Bloom has come on board to exec produce “The Greasy Hands Preachers,” a documentary feature set up at Paris-based Mercenary Prod and helmed by Clement Beauvais and Arthur de Kersauson about the deep joys of two-wheel moto riding.

As part of his EP role, Bloom will put his major star status behind “The Greasy Hands Preachers,” tub-thumping it at its world premiere this Friday at Spain’s San Sebastian Festival.

Blooms’s presence and passion for the film and its subject – in the directors’ words, the deep satisfaction of manual work, in this case on motorcycles, the sense of time, the relation between the form and the function, the joy of riding in a beautiful landscape and the community and friendship that motorcycle creates – looks set to turn “The Greasy Hands Preachers” into one of the highest-profile bows at San Sebastián.

Using the tag-line “Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul,” and Beauvais and De Kersauson’s debut feature after commercials and docu shorts, “Greasy Hands Preachers” was shot in 16mm in California, Utah, Indonesia, Spain, Scotland and France.

Film features motorbike enthusiasts – El Solitario, Shinya Kimura, Blitz, Deus ex Machina and Roland Sands – who have turned their back on the pressure to enter the white-collar sector –or stay in that world, whether commodity trading or Internet marketing – and have rebelled against the devaluation of manual work since the 60s’.

Bloom will roll up to the San Sebastian’s Kursaal escorted by the stars of the film on their bikes.

As the interviewees claim in “Greasy Hands Preachers,” their mechanical labor, here on bikes, has helped forge friendships, allowed some to earn a new living, and enjoy a better way of life.

This sounds great for Orlando, we all know how much he enjoys his motorbikes so I am not surprised that Orlando would want to be an Executive Producer for this project. I also hope it is successful for him. :)

I agree with CaliMom that it is disturbing and rather odd seeing ET with the cigarette. :blink: Not really a good message to be sending to the kids, although I don't think he is as popular with today's kids as he was in the 80s.

NEW YORK, March 30, 2015 – After a successful world premiere at the 2014 San Sebastian International Film Festival, “The Greasy Hands Preachers” makes its worldwide debut today exclusively on Vimeo On Demand. The documentary explores a modern day return to manual work through the passion of motorcycle enthusiasts around the world, shot entirely on Super16mm.

Directed, written, and produced by Clement Beauvais and Arthur de Kersauson of Paris-based Mercenary Pictures, the film is executive produced by Orlando Bloom, Nicolas Manuel and Thomas Vignali. Cinematography is by Jacques Ballard, Ryan Carmody, Stephane Vallee and Valentin Vignet. Editor is Clement Beauvais and Composition is by Los Bevardos and Clement Beauvais.

"This doc is about people and their passion for machines, getting their hands greasy, giving up convention and following their dreams," said Bloom.

Shot across California, Utah, Indonesia, Spain, Scotland and France, the filmmakers capture mechanics and custom shop founders as they try to understand the difference between manual and intellectual work. It explores the unique satisfaction that results from doing something tangible, the sense of time, the relation between the form and the function, the joy of riding in a beautiful landscape and the community and friendship that motorcycle creates.

The film was partly crowdfunded by Kickstarter and supported by sponsorships from Belstaff, BMW Motorrad and Motul.

The film is available worldwide exclusively on Vimeo On Demand starting today.

I'm not a motorcycle enthusiast but can get behind the idea of working on a project you love, creating something with your hands that is beautiful and functional and takes you out of your routine. There's great satisfaction for me in getting my hands dirty when the end result is something I can be proud of. And doing it with like-minded folks is the icing on the cake.
