Tolkien Art Display

Recommended Posts

It's not much notice, less than 24 hours, but there is a free, one-day-only display of Tolkien's art at the Oxford Bodleian Library for World Book Day. The art was donated to Oxford by the family in 1979 and includes a rare first edition of The Hobbit and some of his Hobbit doodles. The black and white drawings appeared in the British first edition of The Hobbit. There are also 5 watercolors that the American publishers wanted for the American edition.

So if you're in the neighborhood and can take a long lunch, check out the art which was part of the creative process that molded Middle Earth as we know it.

Dammit, I may be nearer than many of you but I still can't get there. I wish they would hurry up and invent teleports! I am reading 'The History of the Hobbit' at the moment.
