Patty
I have been so busy with family and visitors that I almost let this slip by. I just want to say Happy Birthday to the author who has made more of an impact on me and my life than any other. The Tolkien Society invites all of his admirers and fans to toast him as follows: On the 3rd January 1892 JRR Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. To celebrate this event, on this day each year Tolkien fans around the world are invited to raise a glass and toast the birthday of this much loved author. The toast is "The Professor". For those unfamiliar with British toast-drinking ceremonies: To make the Birthday Toast, you stand, raise a glass of your choice of drink (not necessarily alcoholic), and say the words 'The Professor' before taking a sip (or swig, if that's more appropriate for your drink). Sit and enjoy the rest of your drink. And Here are some of our Tolkien stories from previous years. The Professor Thank-you for the beauty and the wonder you brought to our world. Adrianne
With all that's been going on in my life the past few weeks, the Professor's birthday went right out of my head. I can imagine what the gaffer would have to say about that. Thanks so much for being on top of things, Patty. How poorer my life would be if not for the stunningly brilliant mind of one JRR Tolkien and the complex, magical, beautiful, sad and glorious world he created. "The Professor!" Serenity
The professor! Ladies, you've all said it so well. Thanks for opening this thread, Patty! If it weren't for Tolkien, I can only imagine how empty my life might be. Because of him, I've discovered a fascinating world that is easy to lose oneself in, friendships that enrich the very fibers of my life, and a beautiful soul inside a delightfully handsome young man (or rather, group of them). Happy Birthday, JRR Tolkein!

Suzie
I know it's a bit late, but happy birthday to our dear Professor! How empty our world would be, like you all said, without his incredible imagination. Not to mention I named my dear dog "Frodo."
