Elizabethtown Partial/Test Screenings

Recommended Posts

Ran across some info, which of course comes from the IMDB message forum (LINK) so take with a grain of salt:

GasWebster (Sun May 8 2005 01:47:43 ):  Jane, I was in the audience last weekend when Cameron Crowe showed a bunch of "Elizabethtown" to the national convention of Independent Music Store owners in Seattle. I slipped in because I am a friend of local record store owners. (Pearl Jam played a killer set the night before at Easy Street Records) Afterwards, the great Jim James of My Morning Jacket played a solo set. I have to say that the footage, and the songs and the whole mood of "Etown" blew us all away. The movie is very funny, deeply funny. Cameron Crowe talked about the movie beforehand and said that they are still editing the film. It looks amazing, and I am not a big fan of Kirsten Dunst but I've never seen her this winning and charming. And I don't think anybody has seen Orlando Bloom like this either. The scenes themselves were surprisingly emotional, and this movie looks like vintage Crowe, with another layer attached. If Paramount don't have a good trailer yet, they will soon because what I saw was amazing. everyone there felt like they'd seen something truly special.

Steveo, we didn't see the whole thing but the feeling was like "Say Anything" and "Almost Famous". All the stuff in Kentucky was very funny, but it made you want to cry with emotion. It's going to be a great movie. Oh, and Cameron Crowe also said that he wanted to tour with the movie and take it to the places he filmed and more -- all through September. I don't think you can put this movie into the usual "Hollywood" box, and that's real good news for those of us who love movies and music. Hope this helps.

OMG :quiver: .

What with being all excited about Orlando's wonderful performance in KOH, and now this... I don't think I'm going to make it. I think I'm going to implode. But ohhh what a way to go. Elizabethtown sounds like just my kind of movie, and to hear Cameron Crowe's comments about how well the filming went reinforced by an outsider is just.

I'll try to keep it quiet.

Squeeeeeeee! I'm so excited!!

Oh I so can't wait for Elizabethtown! I'm actually thinking about heading over to the states for a holiday when it's released, as i don't think I can bear to wait an extra month to see it over here!

It's going to be sooooo gooood.

I'm with you LG - in full wibble mode!

I really can't wait. I'd not seen much of Cameron Crowe's work before Orlando got Etown, but have since sought it out and am now an addict. This is going to be my kind of movie - so much more so than KOH - I just know it

Since every Cameron Crowe movie I saw so far has been the perfect symbiosis of music and film I just know that Elizabethtown will be my end, but what a way to go.

What a way to go indeed.

:yahoo:

I love being a music addict, and I love Cameron Crowe for feeding that obsession.

Orlando is going to shine in this movie, but I guess I am not telling anything new here.

Thanks for sharing, MI! Awesome.

I'm trying hard to not get overly excited about this movie and not let my expectations get up too high. which is very difficult!

Interesting - just went and read the whole thread over on IMDB.

The debate is about the move in the release date, and 'insider' information on Paramount not knowing what to make of the movie. Cameron's KOHn note is quoted as evidence that the film's not finished yet.

I know this is IMDB, so a massive dose of salt is needed, but it does seem like the type of film that Paramount will have trouble marketing.

Thoughts?

Kathryn.

Reading the thread, the poster is full of :censor: about Paramount having a problem and about the gloom and doom of the release date. How's that for an opinion?

Cameron isn't a speed demon, he likes to get it just right and from the classics he has put out, he can take all the time he wants. Mores the better in anticipation of awards season. Plus it's not being dumped in no man's land of September and just before the November holiday rush. Mucho perfect in my not so humble opinion.

Paramount has been in the business a long long time. They happen to know how to market and from all I'm hearing will really push the movie and far in advance of October. I'm not even remotely concerned.

B) I like a woman with strong opinions!

The idea intrigued me because I was trying to describe the film to a friend the other day - 'Orlando plays a suicidal trainer designer, he meets Kirsten Dunst when he's on the way to pick up his father's ashes and arrange his funeral. It's a romantic comedy' - and she was very :wtf: .

Maybe I'm just not very good at describing movies!

It's not typical rom-com fare, but then that appeals to me. You're right though, that is what the pre-christmas season is for - serious, good, interesting and different films, some of which might even be comedic. I really don't see how the film's been 'dumped' in October - it's a far better time for the movie than the summer. If they'd wanted to dump it, they'd be releasing it in February.

I really think that word of mouth is going to be crucial for this film, because it's the quality that will show. All the marketing campaigns in the world won't help a bad movie.

I stumbled across that last night while searching the net for news on E-twon. With all the other stuff that I read in the threads (insert major rolling eyes here) I kind of blew it off.

Although that bit about taking the movie to all the places it was filmed, I'd really like to believe.

Even taken with a whole bag of salt, that is some sweet news. B) The only Cameron Crowe movie that I have seen so far is Jerry Maguire. It goes without saying that I loved it. I am not a huge fan of either Tom Cruise or Renee Zellwegar (sp?) but they both shone in that movie.a very human, believable story. I can only imagine and hope what Mr. Crowe has done with Orlando in this.

I can't wait. Period. :smoke:

Ok, this little tease is just cruel and unusual punishment!! As if the fact that Orlando was in the movie wasn't reason enough to be impatient to see it, now we have THIS!!

Man oh man oh man!

Here is the first of many:

Patience, Zoe Bear. ( As I insert my LOTR ROTK DVD and skip to the parts that are exclusively Legolas). :throb:

I too am looking foward to Etown as I think it will make the Hollywood community stand up and take notice of our beloved OB.

Can I join the " Is it October yet?" club?

I know it's to be taken with a huge grain of salt, but this just makes me happy. I mean, it's a positive review, of sorts. I didn't read the thread on IMDb because I don't go there. What MI brought over was very positive, though.

Reading that Cameron wants to take it to the places he filmed it in is just like him. I'm still wondering if he's going to premiere it in Kentucky. I'm definitely planning on heading down there when/if that happens! Another opportunity for the next DYC sighting by Orlando. :shiny:

Do I sense another Pearl Jam fan on the boards? :shiny: Very cool.

As a long-time fan of Cameron (ever since Singles), I have been giddy with excitement over this movie since I first heard Orlando was doing it. I can't wait for October! It might just kill me, but what a way to go!

Thank you for the article, Julia. I am happy Orlando has another movie coming out in a few months, and it seems E-Town will be the one that cements Orlando as an actor worthy or our respect. I know I have said "is it May yet?" until just a few weeks ago, but now I am saying, "is it October yet?" And I think we need Drew smilie, Jan. :)

:punk: I loved Singles! I was (and still am) into Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and a lot of those Seattle grunge bands. In fact I just found my Singles soundtrack and was listenting to it last weekend.

As I listened to it, I kept thinking about the great soundtrack Cameron will have for E-town. Music is such an important part of his films, I can't wait to see what he comes up with!

Maybe if we're lucky, he'll throw on some Pearl Jam! :w00t:

Cameron's KOHn note is quoted as evidence that the film's not finished yet.

I was the one who posted the link to the letter from Cameron Crowe, hope you all don't mind. I just found some inconsistencies in her story and wanted to point them out.

I found it interesting that she quoted that the movie was finished in the first post

Now, despite being completed to the filmmakers' satisfaction

and since hearing about the letter has changed her mind and declared that

Crowe writes slowly, shoots slowly. I'm sure he edits slowly. I don't know what Kabloom is, but if they got a letter from him, I'm sure what he said is the truth.

She started off saying that 'the move to October was a very bad thing and that the movie has not turned out to the studios satisifaction and will bomb' and if you read the whole thread she slowly changes it to 'it didn't become the summer rom-com Paramount thought it would be and they don't know how to market it'.

I suppose I just find that strange because I have never seen Elizabethtown put forward as a straight up rom-com like Notting Hill and all of Cameron Crowes films have been hard to fit into one genre in the past.

Singles, Say Anything, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky.what would you class them as?

Lastly if what she is saying is true then I think it's not so much a negative but a positive. If they were hoping for a straight up romantic comedy but ended up with something more isn't that a good thing?

Also, as MovieImp stated, why would they move a movie they were disatissified with to the start of the Oscar season in October rather than placing it in a lower profile month like September?

Edited by the moderators for lack of capitalisation.

I am going to jump on the 'Is it October yet?' bandwagon! I'm really looking forward to Elizabethtown, and have got really good vibes about it, I think it's going to be such a good movie that those who want to slander Orlando just for the sake of it won't anyway because of how undeniably fantastic it is. Saying that, I do also think that this film will definitely be one where the critics will properly stand up and realise his true potential and undeniable talent!

I'm just glad I've got my inevitable Summer Star Wars craze before then to hopefully help it come around a lot faster!

I had wondered who it was!

I had a scout about and her read her posts in another thread, and she claims to have seen an initial rough cut, so it's possible she thought it was done but that Cameron is still actually tweaking.

She actually gets more and more positive about the actual film as her posts go on - I suspect she works with/for someone involved in the marketing side who's having a headache deciding what approach to take, and that listening to them moan coloured her initial thinking. I did some work experience in a publisher's publicity department last week and I overheard that happen. The publicity officer was complaining about having to work with a particular author and asking a colleague to take on some of the work, and they were grumbling away about not knowing what to do for her - but when they actually got on to the book it was 'oh it's wonderful, she's won lots of award in New Zealand and Australia, it's a really good book actually'. You never would have guessed that from the way she was complaining though!

Kathryn.

ETA:

Orlando Bloom. Who would've thought? Aside from the very distinctive way he speaks when he's passionate (I mean excitable, not literally passionate), he was something completely new for me. I do love what Crowe does. He kinda breaks down the rules, makes a movie about more than one thing, and brings it together somehow. Fact, I won't criticize a thing about the movie. What I have seen was incomplete. It would be like reading every other page of a book.

You know I think I could get to like this 'Jane' woman after all.

I read through the whole thread over on imdb, and a thought occurred to me (something that occasionally happens, despite what my children think  ).

The only reason why anybody would be concerned about how to market Elizabethtown is that the movie is going to be rated R.

Because if it's a PG-13, it would market itself, wouldn't it? Who cares what the movie is about? Who cares whether it's any good, even? It's Orlando. :faint: In a movie that teenage girls can actually buy tickets to. :yum: What more do you need, really? :lmao:

Unfortunately, though, most of Cameron Crowe's previous movies have been R, so maybe this one is, too.

I posted something over on imdb asking Jane about the likely rating. We'll have to see if she knows anything about that.
